Anderson v1 pg311 - letter #295

Although they do so quite unconsciously, yet people with really fine qualities do think of one another; and that is the case too with you and me, my dear, beloved Theresa.   I still owe you most loving thanks for your beautiful picture; and while calling myself your debtor at the same time appear as a beggar.  For I do request you, if you feel inspired by the deity of painting, to send me again that little sketch which I have been unfortunate enough to lose.  An eagle was gazing at the sun, that was the subject.  I can never forget it.  But you must not assume that in this connexion I am thinking of myself, although such a thought has already been imputed to me.  Why, many people surely like to witness an act of heroism without being in the very least like heroes.  All good wishes, dear Therese, and think now and then of your friend who sincerely admires you.
